Third time's the charm..how celebrity saves lives

I read today about a puppy that has survived two attempts to euthanize him.  Don't worry about the little guy, there's now a long list of people waiting to adopt him, so in his case all's well that ends well. It got me thinking though. Why did he have to suffer through two attempted murders before he was deemed worthy?  He's no different now than he was when he was first brought to the shelter, but somehow his newfound celebrity has rendered him adoptable.  That's how it is in America, I guess.  Think about the homeless man who was recently in the news because of his incredible singing.  He has many problems to overcome, and I wish him the best of luck, but before the media got hold of him nobody gave three shits whether he lived or died.  People passed him, ignored him, maybe treated him badly, but nobody thought of him as a man of worth until they were told to by the press.  We have become a nation of sheep and idol worshippers.  No one seems to have an idea of their own anymore.  Seems like most people are waiting to be told what to wear, eat, care about....even the so called nonconformists like these emo people operate by a standard set of rules laid out by popular opinion of what they "should" be.  Individuality seems to be a dying art.  Everything seems to be done for shock value and stardom.  Who can blame them though?  After all, apparently it's enough to get your neck off the chopping block.  Just a thought....
